U3A

Third age is the right age for fun

If you’re over 50 and looking to get fit, extend your skills, explore your creative potential or simply have some fun then U3A might be just what you’re looking for.

University of the Third Age (U3A) is the premier organisation for retirees, and the Dalby club hosts a wide range of activities that offer challenge and enjoyment for its 230 strong membership.

Dalby U3A president Lex Shepherd says the club’s motto is ‘Friendship and Fulfilment’ which it delivers through fun activities designed specifically for the older population.

“The club organises entertainment, and in return, its members extend their friendship and involvement.

“And the Dalby club is an ideal size - large enough to offer a diverse range of activities yet small enough for everyone to meet other members of the group.”

The program is proving popular with the number of participants doubling in the past four years and a continually expanding list of interesting courses.

U3A now offers around 25 different activities and is working to increase its male membership with options such as darts, table tennis and indoor bowls that appeal to male interests.

Along with regular activities the group runs special events throughout the year such as Melbourne Cup functions, bus trips and barbecue nights some of which help raise funds for worthwhile causes.

Classes are run by local tutors and U3A welcomes anyone who is keen to offer their skills.

“If people have some talent they want to share with others then they are welcome to offer their services as a tutor.”

Among the club’s wide range of activities are computer skills, philosophy, aqua aerobics, walking, needle craft, painting, creative writing, book discussions, folk art, card games, singing, scrabble, bird watching and armchair travel.
